Holstenstrasse / Max-Brauer-Allee December 2010: The cycle track has the obligation to be used

Really shameful for next years European Green Capital Hamburg: The last days until today cyclists in Hamburg need to cycle on the road lanes with the car traffic while cycle tracks with the obligation to be used are covered with snow. Only a few people withstand the cycle unfriendly policy of the Hamburg State Government and keep on cycling during winter weather. This does not fit to a city that promises to double proportion of cycle traffic and praises it´s own efforts to protect climate.

In 2010 for a about three month nearly nobody was cycling in Hamburg due to failure of snow removal on cycle tracks and cycle lanes. But the city of Hamburg does not take into account this interruption of cycle traffic in the statistics. The actual Hamburg cycling proportion of 13% has to be reduced onto 10% due to the lack of cycling in the three month winter period for an all year cycling proportion. On the other hand Copenhagen citizens withstand winter weather, 80% of all cyclists keep on cycling during winter due to excellent efforts of the city. Copenhagen cycle tracks have to be kept free from snow for at least two meters wide, and sidewalks too. As a recompense Copenhagen cyclists do help the city to reduce CO2 traffic emissions with cycling during winter significantly.

A real city for cyclists
  • encourages people to cycle all seasons long and in any weather
  • makes possible to cycle all seasons long and in any weather
  • increases the percentage of cyclists commuting
  • ensures cyclists feeling safe in the traffic
  • gives cycling a high priority among other means of traffic to reduce CO2 traffic emissions and noise pollution
